Work for a Win
Hard to believe that September is drawing to a close and, if it’s an even year like 2010, that can only mean one thing: Election season is upon us.
After all the energy that 2008 generated, this year certainly seems like kind of a downer for those of us who vote pro-choice. The national media has certainly done a great job of painting a doomsday picture of a referendum on an unpopular President and Congress.
Then over the weekend we had this sobering piece on Republican aspirations to take over both the state House and Senate for the first time in over a century. While the Planned Parenthood Action Fund is non-partisan and would happily endorse a pro-choice Republican, like many other states in the Southeast, North Carolina does not have a single pro-choice Republican in our General Assembly(at least none that have “outed” themselves) so such a shift in power could be devestating to the gains that North Carolina has made over the past several legislative sessions.
Healthy Youth Act out? Choose Life License Plates in? It’s a bleak picture to consider but it doesn’t have to be this way. Many of our friends in the Legislature are suffering tough races this November thanks to the crisis of popularity of Democrats at the national level. Yet, these legislators have done great things for their communities including bringing in jobs, improving educational opportunities, and, of course, putting real sex ed back in schools.
Nothing is a foregone conclusion for November 2nd unless we choose to stand by and do nothing. We still have the opportunity to work hard for pro-choice candidates and help keep North Carolina moving forward over the next two years and that is exactly what the Planned Parenthood Action Fund plans to do!
Even Planned Parenthood can’t save the world alone so this is where you come in! We need your help! Live in the Triangle or Fayetteville area? Sign up to help us phone bank to get out the pro-choice vote this October. We start next week on October 5 in Chapel Hill and October 7 in Fayetteville with other volunteer opportunities all the way up to Election Day!
