Hey BCBS, It’s about Choice!
If you live in NC and are fortunate enough to have health insurance, likely as not you’re insured by Blue Cross Blue Shield. They control more than 50% of the market in NC. They like it that way and why not?http://www.wral.com/news/local/wral_investigates/story/4668082/ )
If people had another option, BCBS wouldn’t enjoy record profits every year. (CEO was paid almost $4 million last year alone
That’s why they spent thousands upon untold thousands of dollars—they’re not saying how much–to send voters a flier containing a pre-printed, postage-paid postcard to be clipped and sent to Senator Hagan.
What does the BCBS postcard to Senator Hagan say? NC doesn’t need a public option. Translated in real terms, it means BCBS would like to keep their 50% share of the market and raise it. No competition– no other choice for consumers–is exactly what BCBS wants.
Apparently, BCBS sent these postcards right on the heels of having sent their customers a letter detailing why they need to raise their rates by 11% this year. How convenient. Wonder if any of those premium hikes go to pay for their slick fliers or lobbying efforts to kill competition?
If you’re as outraged as I am there’s a quick and fun fix. If you got the postcard, simply reword it in favor of a public option and put it in the mail—postage paid by BCBS. If you care passionately about reproductive freedom, include a note saying the public option must cover reproductive healthcare, including abortion care. Here’s a copy of mine.
